In July 1969, during the manned Apollo 11 spaceflight, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle, with Armstrong becoming the first human to set foot on the lunar surface, followed by Aldrin. Michael Collins piloted the Command and Service Module Columbia into lunar orbit alone while his crewmates remained on the surface. They collected supplies to bring back to Earth. The mission launched atop a Saturn V rocket from the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the fifth manned mission of NASA's Apollo program. Broadcast live on television around the world, Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface and uttered the famous words: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Apollo 11 ended the space race and achieved the national goal set in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth before the end of the decade.
