Khazad-dûm was the greatest of the Dwarf kingdoms of old. A vast labyrinth of halls and passages carved deep into the Misty Mountains, it contained the city of Dwarrowdelf, home of the Longbeards: Durin's folk. For thousands of years Khazad-dûm remained the seat of Dwarf power in Middle-earth, and while the Dwarves occupied its halls, work continued unabated. Following the rich veins of Mithril silver, the most precious of metals, the Dwarves dug ever deeper. In times of wealth and peace the western gate of Khazad-dûm was open. Trade flourished between Durin's folk and the neighboring Elves. The gates themselves were a symbol of friendship between the two, forged as they were by the hands of both Dwarves and Elves. The Mithril mined within was magically spun into Ithildin letters and iconography that shone only in the light of the moon or stars. Their transparent surfaces were inlaid with the initials of their creators, the king, and the enigmatic inscription "Speak friend and enter." While the Dwarves enjoyed many long years of quiet prosperity, the day finally came when war and death invaded Khazad-dûm and the Doors of Durin were sealed. By the closing years of the Third Age of Middle-earth, no Dwarf dared cross the threshold of their people's once proud empire. It was called Moria, the Black Pit, home of Orcs and far worse. Thus, when the Company arrived at the Celebdil Cliffs, they found the Gates closed and surrounded by decay. Even the once-beautiful holly trees that lined the entrance were dead and pale, their roots submerged in a sickly black puddle that had gathered before the gate. From beneath the darkness, hostile eyes watched the companions as they paused and searched for a way in.
