Once a stronghold of Gondor, now a stronghold of the kingdom of Rohan, Helm's Deep was carved into the foothills of the White Mountains, beneath the mighty Thrihyrne. Helm's Deep Fortress is named after Helm Hammerhand, former king of Rohan, who brought his people to the fortress during the Long Winter. Built to resist, the Abyss was nestled in a gorge, flush with the mountainside, and was a place where the people of Rohan could seek refuge for long periods of time, as was Théoden's plan when he led the Rohirrim there in prediction of Saruman's attack. . Covering the valley was the Deeping Wall; an impenetrable stone facade, except for a small culvert at the base. Saruman would send an army of ten thousand Uruk-hai to wipe out the woefully outnumbered Rohirrim, and though Théoden had counted on the stronghold stone to protect them, he had not counted on the Wizard's cunning. Giant ladders and ballistae launched grappling hooks to drag them against the Deeping Wall, while Uruk-hai armed with explosive devices targeted the small culvert at the base of the wall, breaching defenses hitherto thought impervious. While the fortress was under siege, Éowyn led Rohan's vulnerable to refuge in the Glittering Caves of Aglarond, beyond the Abyss. Surrounded by glittering crystals and mineral pools, the refugees were forced to await the conflict, not knowing the fate of their kin in battle, or what awaited them; for better or for worse.
