Narsil & Trade;/Anduril & Trade; are perhaps the most famous swords in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. At the end of the second age of Middle-earth, Narsil's blade was shattered, while Elendil fell during the last alliance of Elves and Men in the Great Battle against Sauron, creating the shards of Narsil & Trade;. Isildur, Elendil's son, then used the broken hilt of Narsil & Trade; to cut the One Ring from Sauron's finger, severing the bonds of his power, banishing his evil shadow into darkness. The shards were kept in Rivendell, the home of Elrond, for safekeeping. Legend said that one day the sword would be reforged and the king would return.
In New Line Cinema's The Return of the King, Anduril & Trade; was reassembled from the fragments of Narsil & Trade; Per Aragorn of Elvensmiths in Rivendell. Elrond said of the legendary blade, "The man who can wield the power of this sword can summon to him an army more deadly than any who walk this earth." The inscription along the length of the blade on both sides is in Tolkien's Quenya language, written in the runes of Eregion, which reads N ‡ ny 'andoeril i nž narsil i macil elendilo. Lercuvanten im ‡ Li Mord-r'o. This translates to I Am Andoeril, which was Narsil, the sword of Elendil. Let the slaves of Mordor escape me." The blade inscription features runes framed by stylized sun and moon symbols, representing Rion and Isildur, Elendil's sons, and seven symbolic stars representing Elendil, who died wielding Narsil & Trade in battle against Sauron. Inscribed on the pommel are runes in the Elven language Sindarin that read Narsil Essenya, Macil Meletya; Telchar Carneron Navarotesse. This translates to Narsil is my name, a mighty sword; Telchar made me in Nogrod.
