    Product description

Looming over the lands like a dark giant; a solitary figure of commanding grandeur, inspiring awe and wonder both for its purpose and its construction, stood the inimitable tower: Orthanc. At the center of the Ring of Isengard stood a great tower of polished black stone. Hewn centuries ago from a monolith of dark rock by long-forgotten crafts, the Tower of Orthanc stood sharp and hard against a field of green trees and towering snow-capped mountains. In the final years of the Third Age, it housed the Wizard Saruman, who spent his days in its dark halls studying the ways of his enemy, hoping to better understand and ultimately defeat him. He held a Saruman Palantír; one of the ancient seeing stones of Númenor. The Wizard spent many long hours gazing into this magical sphere, watching Sauron, believing himself wise and powerful, and impervious to his enemy's wiles. Yet, in truth, Saruman's pride and folly willingly led him into Sauron's trap, for he fell in love with the Dark Lord's arts and coveted his power. Because of the stone, his mind was twisted until he became a vassal of Mordor, and Orthanc, once a place of learning and beauty, was sacked by Orcs, now a place of terror. The trees were gone, fuel for the fires of industry that burned in the pits around the tower, and the plains within the ringed walls were a wasteland scorched with ash, where armies practiced and marched as a prelude to war against those Saruman once called friends.
