Lord of the Rings Statue Gandalf on Gwaihir 15 cm

Immortal beings far larger than ordinary birds of prey, the Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains soared so high that only the keen eyes of the Elves could distinguish them in the blue.

Invisible and untouchable, their mastery of the sky was unrivaled until Sauron's Ringwraiths took to the skies on the backs of winged beasts during the War of the Ring. Even the dragons of old could not match their aerial prowess, and their eyesight was so keen that they could even sense the movement of a mouse on the mountainside. Orcs tread the slopes openly at their own peril, and the Wargs keep to the deep forests where the trees guard their passage.

In the days of the Third Age the most powerful of the Eagles was Gwaihir the Wind Lord. Friend of Gandalf the Grey, he carried the Wizard on his shoulders and more than once flew to his aid when great need called him.
