Consisting of four young mutant turtles with humanoid features, genetically altered by a viscous substance called mutagen or mudo, the brothers gained their father figure and master sensei in the form of an anthropomorphic rat named Splinter, who named them after Italian Renaissance artists. Their home and base of operations in New York are located in the sewers, where they hide during the day and venture out on their missions at night. Their greatest archenemy is Shredder, the leader of the Foot Clan. Directed by Steve Barron, the 1990 independent film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles presents the origin story of Splinter and the Turtles, their initial encounter with journalist April O'Neil and vigilante Casey Jones, and their first confrontation with the evil Shredder and his criminal group, the CRAN NINJA. Donatello, known as Don or Donnie to his brothers, is the group's scientist, inventor, engineer, and technological genius. Donatello wears a purple mask and wields a Bo staff and is arguably the least violent of the group, preferring to use his knowledge to resolve conflicts but never hesitating to defend his brothers.
