The tale of the wooden boy who wished he were a real boy, based on the novel written by the Italian writer Carlo Collodi in 1883, gets a version set in Italy in the 1930s, under the fascist regime and the Second World War. In the plot, a once respected artist carpenter named Geppetto spends the day mourning the premature death of his only son, victim of a military bomb that fell on his small town. To honor his memory, he plants a pine cone that he received from his son next to his grave. Sebastian, an anthropomorphic cricket, begins to live in the pine tree that grew there, but one day, Geppetto cuts down the pine tree, frustrated by the feeling of loss, and with its wood builds a puppet that shortly after, comes to life thanks to the mystical powers of the Fairy of the Forest who names him Pinocchio. The Fairy promises to grant Sebastian a wish in exchange for his services as a moral guide to Pinocchio.
