Immortal beings many times the size of ordinary birds of prey, the great eagles of the misty mountains soared so high that only the keen eyes of Elves could discern blue. Invisible and untouchable, their mastery of the skies was not reassessed until the Sauron Ringwraiths descended on the backs of fallen winged beasts during the War of the Ring. Even dragons could not match their aerial prowess, and so keen was their vision that they could even detect the twitching of a mouse on the mountainside. Orcs openly roam the slopes at their own peril, and Wargs kept to the deep forests where the trees protected their disappearance. In the days of the Third Age, the mightiest of eagles was Gwaihir the Wind. A friend of Gandalf the Grey, he carried the wizard on his back and more than once flew to his aid when great need called.
